Historical references in the area

Chapel of Saint Lazarus

The Chapel of São Lázaro is located in São Pedro de Sintra, having been built during the 15th century on the site of a previous gafaria (where lepers were hospitalized and treated).

The S.Pedro fair,

place of pilgrimage for Sintrenses and tourists, twice a month, on the second and fourth Sundays, “never before eight nor after twenty-eight”, it began in 1781, as an annual fair, with authorization from D.Maria I and at the request of the Count of Cantanhede and other residents, such as Joaquim Ignacio da Cruz Sobral, who had houses and farms in the place of Sam Pedro de Pennaferrim de Cintra and had the necessary movement for expenses from their homes as they are about four leagues away from this court. And because in the said place there was a comfortable garden to be able to hold a free fair on the day of Sam Pedro(…) They will ask me to do them the favor of granting Provision for the so-called free fair should be held on the days of Sam Pedro every year”

In these terms, the first fair took place on March 1, 1781, becoming bimonthly in 1924, and for a long time it was a livestock fair.

Chapel of Saint Eufemia

According to the chronicles of the crusades dating back to 1147, the water coming from the source of Santa Eufémia had healing powers, which is why, in the 13th century, the hermitage of Santa Eufémia was built, which became a place of pilgrimage and devotion.
