The origin of Penaferrim

São Pedro de Sintra or São Pedro de Penaferrim, is referred to in ancient writings as São Pedro de Calaferrim, later as São Pedro de Canaferrim and nowadays as São Pedro de Penaferrim. However, the origin and evolution of these names is based on the Portuguese language, and the names mentioned above may come from Arabic origin: "qala'â" - a town situated on a plateau or steep rock and "de ferrinu" - alluding to the nature of the land or water in the town. The final change from Canaferrim to Penaferrim was due to the influence of Pena, a well-known name in the region. "Pena" derives from the Latin "penna", a variant of "pinna", "penha", which means rock, cliff.

Convent of the Capuchos

According to legend, during a hunt in the Sintra mountains, when chasing a deer, the 4th viceroy of India, D. João de Castro, got lost and fell asleep from exhaustion under a rock. In a dream, the need to build a Christian temple in that location was revealed to him.

When he died later (1548), without having had the opportunity to fulfill this obligation, he passed it on to his son. Thus, a convent of Franciscan friars of the strictest observance of the Province of Arrábida was founded in 1560 by D. Álvaro de Castro, State Councilor of Sebastião I of Portugal and administrator of the Treasury.

The primitive community was made up of eight friars, the best known being Friar Honório who, according to legend, lived to be close to 100 years old, despite having spent the last three decades of his life doing penance living in a small cave. inside the convent fence.Buy your ticket online.
